What wearable data reveals about everyday life웨어러블 데이터가 보여주는 일상의 재발견

Rory McIlroy won the Masters again. He won last year too, so that's back-to-back. The first repeat Masters champion since Tiger Woods, the guy basically made history. McIlroy now stands shoulder to shoulder with legends like Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods. It was a totally different kind of moment from 2025, when he finally landed a major after 11 years and completed the career Grand Slam, this one was a sweat-soaked nail-biter.

History. Repeated.

He started with a 6-shot lead and nearly let Scheffler reel him all the way back in down the stretch. Heart-in-your-throat stuff, but he held on by a single shot. After that rollercoaster of a finish, the moment he sealed the win and dropped to his knees, the green band on Rory's left wrist jumped right out at me. Not a watch, not a smartwatch buzzing with notifications, just a band. Looked like he'd matched it green for the Masters, but I started wondering what the thing even was and why everyone seems to be wearing one.6타 차 리드를 잡고 시작했는데 막판에 셰플러한테 거의 다 잡힐 뻔했으니까.

Turns out it's a fitness tracker called Whoop. Big-name athletes like LeBron James and Michael Phelps have one strapped on too. The weird part is it has no screen at all. No time, no phone notifications. It only measures stuff like your heart rate and sleep, then gives you a daily score every morning telling you how your body's doing. Basically it coaches you, take it easy today, or yeah, you can push it today. It was originally built for pro athletes, but these days regular folks like us wear them all the time.

People today are pretty used to this kind of data by now. Watch the cycling and running crowd. Without Garmin or Strava, they don't even count it as a workout, and checking their own data and records has just become part of daily life. Remember when everyone was puzzled by that vest Hwang Hee-chan was wearing under his jersey during a goal celebration? That's an EPTS (Electronic Performance Tracking System). It tucks a little GPS chip into a pocket on the back and pulls out a player's distance covered, number of sprints, heart rate, all of it in real time.

Anyway, pro or amateur, these days you can walk into any neighborhood gym and everyone's got a smartwatch on while they work out. Seeing your own body as numbers has become a totally natural thing.

So I went and got myself a Fitbit Air a little while back. At first I wanted a smartwatch to really dig into my sleep data, but actually sleeping with a big thing strapped to my wrist turned out to be way more annoying than I expected, and I lasted only a few days. I thought about switching to a ring, but stacking it next to my wedding ring felt like too much, so I passed. After all that deliberating, I settled on a band. The minimalist design doesn't really mess with how it looks, and the big plus is you don't even notice it when you sleep. In the end, every piece of hardware I hang on, strap to, or wear on my body comes down to one thing, how natural does it feel.

In today's cutthroat subscription market, gadgets like the Whoop that Rory wears give you the device for free but charge a hefty monthly fee instead. (Around $25, roughly double Google's price.) The catch is that the moment you cancel, the device turns into a paperweight. The Fitbit Air, though, you just pay $189 (Singapore pricing) for the device and that's it. If you want the detailed data, you subscribe to Premium. And right now, depending on the market, they throw in a free Premium subscription for a while, which is a pretty sweet deal. Google clearly built this thing to take on Whoop, and the fact that you can comfortably use the Premium service by just paying for the hardware, no forced subscription, was exactly what made it appealing to a consumer like me, no psychological hurdle. Sure, you can try it first and then decide, and who knows how Google will change the pricing a year from now, but for right now this felt like the most sensible choice.

I kept wondering why people are so obsessed with their body's numbers lately, and it really just comes down to the world we live in now. Health is a hot topic, obviously, but on top of that, anything you can actually see as data or a record is what people want. Everyone's chasing peak efficiency and things they can trust. With these fitness bands, the whole point seems to be recovering a lifestyle built on health data. Even McIlroy says he had no idea he was constantly overtraining until he started looking at his body through data. Just going on a gut feeling of "I'm tired today" versus confirming with numbers that "my body's worse off than yesterday, I should rest" are on completely different levels.

Of course there are clear downsides too. I've seen plenty of people around me actually lose interest in working out from obsessing over the data. The numbers are supposed to help you, not rule you. And Koreans really hate paying a monthly fee, even if they'll buy the device outright. There's a real reason models like the Galaxy Ring and now the Fitbit Air do well in Korea. Southeast Asia is a different vibe. Demand is high but official distribution is still painfully slow, and that's an open secret that's honestly a bit frustrating.

Anyway, I haven't had the Fitbit Air for long, but just finding out my sleep is way more of a mess than I thought is already a win. Better to do things smart and informed than to just blindly wing it, right? For now I'm planning to get a little friendlier with this tiny pebble of a band.
